CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — As the Memorial Day holiday weekend kicks off the summer camping season, New Hampshire authorities are reminding people it's illegal to bring untreated firewood into the state without a written consent from them. It's also illegal to transport hardwood firewood outside of Rockingham, Merrimack and Hillsborough counties. These restrictions are attempts to prevent the spread of emerald ash borer, a destructive beetle that targets ash trees. Firewood is a major source of damaging insects and diseases, and the firewood quarantine helps protect the health of New Hampshire's forests, officials said. Forest Rangers with the Division of Forests and Lands are enforcing the firewood quarantine this weekend with roadside checkpoints.

From the NH Division of Forests and Lands, July 2011:

"In order to reduce the spread of exotic forest pests, the movement of firewood of all types and species into state-owned properties, under the administration of the Department of Resources and Economic Development, from sources outside New Hampshire State boundaries is prohibited; unless it is pre-packaged firewood clearly marked with place of origin and labeled "kiln-dried". Any person, employee, or agent of that person, who violates this order shall be guilty of a violation of up to $2,000 (RSA 227-K:17)."

One of the most important things we can do to protect trees is stop moving invasive pests and diseases to new areas on firewood. It’s really that simple- don't move firewood, and keep trees healthy and alive.

Danforth Bay has joined forces with the Don't Move Firewood campaign with a goal of protecting the trees and forests of New England by stopping the transportation of invasive insects and diseases in firewood.

Danforth Bay has bundles of wood for sale at The Depot and a list of safe local wood suppliers is available.
